Nebraska Big Red Satellite

For CubeSats in orbit, the only means of power is the sun. However, half of their orbit around Earth is cloaked in darkness, and many CubeSats fail because their solar panels degrade over time. An emerging type of solar panel, known as perovskites are a thin lightweight alternative to silicon photovoltaics. Nebraska’s Big Red Satellite team will test perovskites’ efficiency and lifetime in space, and light collection ability on the dark side of the earth, and compare to silicon panels using a 1U CubeSat. We aim to engage middle/high school students with STEM and launch the first CubeSat ever from Nebraska.
